Documentation for the Passive Microwave derived melt data
This dataset provides the surface melt area for each of the ten sectors of Greenland and the total annual melt area. The data ranges from 1979-2008.
There are 13 columns and 30 rows.
Column 1 specifies the year.
Columns 2 to 11 list the total number of passive microwave pixels which experienced melting each year.
Column 12 gives the sum of all the pixels for each sector that experienced melting for every year from 1979-2008.
Column 13 is the numer of pixels converted into annual melt area of the entire ice sheet by multiplying with spatial resolution of a pixel (as described below).
The spatial resolution of a passive micorwave pixel is 625 sq. km. Hence to obtain the area for a single year for a single sector, we need to multiply by 625.
For example,
Column 2, Row 1 : 186 pixels
Therefore the Total Melt Area for sector 1 for year 1979 is = 186*625 sq. km.
